Marine Education

Marine Science Floating Lab program is a half day field trip conducted in the San Diego Bay on a boat outfitted with oceanographic equipment specifically for student use.

Kids in the field
All marine science activities incorporate major components of the state science framework and each trip is modified to suit the age group of the experiential expedition.

The curriculum includes:

  • Hands on deployment and retrieval of collection equipment.
  • Observations of the marine life collected.
  • Use of oceanographic and scientific instruments and equipment for observation and analysis.
  • Log and evaluate observations.
  • Return sea life to the bay.

Students write a summary of observations upon return to the classroom.

This program is coordinated through the San Diego County Office of Education, OSI supports some classes that need funding for these important marine science excursions.
